  • 2021 - Outstanding Young Faculty Award, American Society for Engineering Education (ASEE)-Gulf Southwest Section. The award recognizes a faculty member’s contributions to engineering education.

  • 2020 - Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers STAR Educator of the Year Award, The STAR awards are major honors that recognize the contributions of professionals to the fields of science, technology, and engineering. The 27 recipients of the 2020 STAR awards were selected from a field of 181 nominees that include top individuals and institutions in the industry, academia, and government. SHPE is the nation’s largest association dedicated to fostering Hispanic leadership in the STEM field.

  • 2020 - Selected as a member of the inaugural cohort for the ASEE CDEI Cultivating Inclusive Communities Program, This effort is led by the American Society for Engineering Education Commission for Diversity Equity, and Inclusion (ASEE CDEI) Professional Development Committee’s Cultivation Team.

Valenzuela, selected as one of the two student members selected nationwide, Engineering for One Planet Advisory Group, mobilized by The Lemelson Foundation and VentureWell, the Engineering for One Planet (EOP) initiative is building a coalition of organizations and individuals dedicated to the ambitious goal of creating systems change in engineering education.

  • 2020 - Gerardo I. Valenzuela, Diana Natalicio Environmental Internship with the CERM at UTEP, Summer 2020, ~4,000

    • Gerardo was one of the four students accepted for this internship program. The goal of the internship program is to provide UTEP students a professional experience in research, education, and/or outreach focused on environmental science and/or “real-life” environmental issues, especially in the border region.

  • 2019 - Liliana Lozada, CONACYT Ph.D. Scholarship, National Council of Science and Technology, Mexico, 2019-2022, ~$48,000

    • Liliana is the first Ph.D. student in the Construction Management program who has been awarded this scholarship. The CONACYT scholarship is a highly competitive program for Mexican students pursuing a doctoral degree abroad. The CONACYT is the advisory entity that articulates the public policies of the federal Mexican government.

  • 2019 - Joanne Moyer was interviewed by the KZSU STANFORD 90.1 FM regarding her research topic and use of the InVEST tool during the 2019 Natural Capital Symposium.     • Joanne was one of the three presenters chosen to be interviewed by KZSU including Professor Bhasker Vira (Professor of Political Economy, Director of University of Cambridge Conservation Research Institute) and Dr. Nilan Gosh (Director, Observer Research Foundation Kolkata, India & Senior Advisor, Worldwide Fund for Nature).
